Texas Health Resources Implements New HR Dashboard

Texas Health Resources (THR) is one of the largest faith-based, nonprofit healthcare sytems in the United States.  THR was formed in 1997 by combining the assets of the Presbyterian Healthcare System, the Harris Methodist Health System, and Arlington Memorial Hospital. THR owns thirteen hospitals and a medical research organization, making it the largest healthcare system in North Texas.

THR has 18,250 employees and serves 6.3 million people in the greater Dallas/Fort Worth area.  It has more than 3,700 physicians with staff privileges and over 3,300 hospital beds.  In 2003, more than one in five area residents receiving in-patient care sought treatment at a THR hospital. The company is committed to quality and patient safety.

The Challenge
A key component of providing quality services to patients is maintaining the consistency and excellence of its employees.  In addition, THR is a nonprofit company and must understand its costs for its workforce.  Thus, it was essential that THR create a business intelligence solution utilizing a medium that managers across the system could easily access.  THR wished to track the categories of information listed below:

  • Labor Expense
  • Workforce Profile
  • Retention
  • Vacancy Rates

The Solution
THR looked to its HCM outsourcing partner, Animato, to drive the design and execution of its HR business intelligence needs.  Animato assembled and led a team including a business analyst, a technical architect, a Hyperion developer, and a web designer to create the resulting dashboard.  Key tasks of the project included the following:

  • Identify and document requirements from stakeholders
  • Create designs for key indicators and web pages
  • Identify proper data sources from across THR and third-party vendors
  • Develop and test data loading processes
  • Develop and test the reports and user interface
  • Create training materials and train the user community

The Results
Animato delivered a dashboard that is accessible to all THR managers via the THR intranet.  The users of the dashboard may choose from system-wide views of reports as well as entity-level views.  Users may also choose to view data of predefined date ranges or specific months.  The dashboard also contains the ability to drill down into department-level data for each entity.

  • Labor Expense by Category
  • Contract Labor Costs to Budget
  • Workforce Profile (Full-time, Part-time, As-needed)
  • Internal vs. External Hires
  • 1st Year Retention Rates
  • Overall Retention Rates
  • RN Vacancy Rates
  • Overall Vacancy Rates

Animato continues to lead the effort to develop new graphs, reports, and drilling capabilities to provide THR with further business intelligence needed to make informed business decisions.
